We had our first outdoor flag ceremony of the year (Ach f). We also talked about what the Pledge of Allegiance means (Ach a) and how to show respect and take care of the U.S. flag (Ach c).

After completing our achievements, we make our very own flag stands and gave flags to each of the scouts to display in their own homes. We are very proud of our country and what it means to be an American and live in the free society that we do. I hope they scouts will learn the value of that and let it have meaning in their own lives.

June 2010 Monthly Theme: Hoop-De-Doo!

You hear a lot of talk about being a good sport, but what does it mean? A good sport learns the rules so he won't break them. He competes with all his heart, striving to win over his competitors. If he does win, he doesn't act smug, but instead compliments the losers for the good job they did. If he loses, he accepts the fact and tries to figure out why. Maybe he can win the next time. A good sport accepts defeat, congratulates the winners, learns how he can improve, and determines to do better the next time.

Pack Meeting: May 13, 2010

Thanks to all who came to pack meeting this month. We had such a great time with our activity.

First though, I'd like to give a big congratulations to Tyrell Gwilliam who earned his Bobcat and Wolf badges as well as a gold arrow point and a silver arrow point as well as the Heritages belt loop. What an accomplishment. Tyrell will also be moving on to the Bear den this month. We will certainly miss him in the Wolf den.

Jake Kemp, Adam Hildt, Jaxon Wilde and Luke Morris also received their Heritages belt loops this month. These belt loops were earned last month, but due to the service project for pack meeting we did not have the opportunity to give out awards.

For our activity we made, decorated and flew paper airplanes. The boys did such a great job and a big thanks to Jaxon's dad, Don, for helping the boys with their designs.

The scouts had to see whose plane flew the farthest and who could fly them the most accurate. Congratulations to our Primary President, Diana Cook, who beat everyone in the plane distance contest.

We had such a great time. Thanks to everyone who came. See you next month.

The scouts did a lot of running around this week. We worked on Achievment 1a-g and also started our Physical Fitness belt loop requirements, which consisted of sit-ups a standing long jump, dash and softball throw. We also worked on a project for the scouts to give their mothers for Mother's Day. We will complete the project next week, so make sure your there.

Please keep tracking on your money chart for the Math belt loop for one more week.

Friday, April 23, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: April 22, 2010

This week we continued to work on our Math belt loop. We started by talking about different ways we use everyday at home or at school. The boys then went into the kitchen and we started on our treat. We made home-made Oreo cookies. Each scout had to participate by measuring, counting, helping with time or temperature in the baking process.

After our cookies were underway, we continued to talk about the different systems of measurements. We were able to measure our hands, distances the scouts could jump and how many scouts it took to cross the room. After all that, back to the kitchen to finish our cookies.

Whew, there was a lot to accomplish this week. Please remember to continue to work on your money chart for two more weeks.

Wolf Den Meeting: April 15, 2010

This week the scouts continued to work on Achievement 5. Though we were supposed to complete the rest of achievement 5a-d today, we were only able to get through achievement 5a. Please complete the rest of achievement 5 with your scouts at home:

b. Show how to use pliers.

c. Identify a Philips head and a standard screw. Then use the right tool to drive and then remove one from a board.

d. Show how to use a hammer.

We also started our Math belt loop and handed out a three week money chart for the boys to keep track of how much they earn and spend. Please help your scout with the chart.

Also to note, Tyrell Gwilliam received all four progress beads at this weeks den meeting, which means he will be getting his Wolf badge at our next Pack Meeting. Congratulations Tyrell, what an accomplishment.

Pack Meeting: April 8, 2010

To go along with our monthly theme, "Spring Into Action," we decided to do a service project for this months Pack Meeting. Scouts and parents got together to help out a sister in our ward do some yard work. I'm sorry I was unable to attend, but I did hear that it was a great opportunity for service and a fun experience for those who went.

Saturday, April 3, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: April 3, 2010

Today we had out field trip to the Home Depot on 90000 S. and Redwood to complete Achievement 5e in our books. What a great experience. We made some wonderful butterly feeders. The scouts did such a great job. They each got their own apron and feeder packet. It was so fun to see them work on the feeders. They did a great job following the instructions building their own feeders. I think they each felt such a sense of accomplishment when they were done. Thanks to all the parents that came and helped out as well.

If your scout wasn't able to attend, Home Depot holds a kids craft day the first Saturday of every month from 9 to 12. Just find one close to you and give them a call to sign up your scout.

April 2010 Monthly Theme: Spring Into Action

This April, our purpose is to spring into action, not to get more exercise (although this is a good benefit), not simply to make us happy (although this is usually a result), but to spring into action for others. Cleaning up litter, planting trees, or helping other people is just one way that you can show the world that you care and are good citizens.

Wolf Den Calendar of Events: April 2010

April 3: Field trip. Meet at 9:30, leave by 9:40 to go to Home Depot on 90000 S. and Redwood to complete Achievement 5e project. Please wear your uniform.

Clarification: Cub Country

I apologize if there has been some confusion on the dates of Cub Country. Since the Wolf den meets with other wards, we do our den meeting calendars together. I failed to notice that the other Wolf den leader noted their Cub Country dates on all of the calendars.

Please note that the Cimarron Ward Cub Country dates are Friday and Saturday, June 18th and 19th. I will be getting out the Activity Consent and Health/Medical form to you to be completed before camp.

Also, the scouts from the other wards pay half of the Cub Country fee, $20.00, as noted on the joint calendar. I have checked and the Cimarron Ward will be paying the full Cub Country fee for the scouts this year. For those that have already paid the fee to me, I will be returning it.

I apologize for the confusion and thank you for your understanding.

Special Reminder for Next Week Den Meeting

As a reminder, we will not be having den meeting on our usual Thursday afternoon next week. We will be meeting at the church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 3rd to go to Home Depot on 90000 S. and Redwood to work on Achievement 5e. Please make sure you wear your scout uniform.

Den Meeting: March 25, 2010

This week we worked on completing our requirements for the Heritage belt loop. The boys told us a little bit about their family, where they were from and if there were any scouts in their family. They also made posters about their family based on the information they gathered from their family interviews. They did such a great job. It is always interesting to find out about our ancestors, where they are from and the lives they lead. There is so much we can learn.

Please remember, we will not be having den meeting on our usual Thursday afternoon next week. We will be meeting at the church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 3rd to go to Home Depot on 90000 S. and Redwood to work on Achievement 5e. Please make sure you wear your scout uniform.

Wolf Den Meeting: March 18, 2010

This week we worked on Achievement 10 a at den meeting. We talked to the boys about cooperation and what it can mean in several different situations. Please help your scout complete Achievement 10 by working on two of the other requirements of b-g with your family.

This week our two week health chart from Achievement 3a was also due. If your scout has not completed it, please keep working on it until completed and let me know or mark it off in their book.

We also handed out a packet of information associated with the Heritage belt loop that will need to be completed and brought back next week to make a poster on the scout's family. The packet included a family tree (three generations), and questions to ask family members about their their family heritage: its history, origins, traditions, and culture.

Thanks for a busy den meeting. Remember, please complete and bring back your family information packet to complete your poster next week.

Pack Meeting: March 11, 2010

I apologize that I wasn't able to make this month's pack meeting. A last minute incident prevented me from coming, but I heard that we had an excellent pack meeting thanks to our guest speaker. Our speaker is a policeman in our ward and came to talk to the scouts about his job. I understand the scouts loved it when they got to try on his S.W.A.T gear. Thank you for taking the time to come and share your job with us.

Also, many of the Wolf's earned their Art belt loop. Congratulations, Jake, Shayne, Adam, Tyrell and Luke.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: March 4, 2010

This week for den meeting we finished up our art belt loop by working on a color wheel. Each of the boys were given a blank color wheel with the colors noted on it and a chunk of red, yellow and blue play doh. They had to mix the primary colors of play doh to make all the remaining secondary and tertiary colors on the color wheel. They did a great job learning about colors and I think they loved playing with the dough.

We also handed out the activity consent form for the field trip on April 3rd to Home Depot for Achievement 5. Please complete and sign the field trip form and return it to me at pack meeting on Thursday, March 11th. We need to sign the boys up for the activity as soon as we can to make sure they have enough spots for all of us. Also, if you are able to help out and come with us as a driver and e chaperon, please let me know. Just a reminder, we will not be having den meeting on that Thursday, April 1st.

Thanks. See everyone at pack meeting.

March 2010 Monthly Theme: Take Flight

It wasn't long ago that you might have heard one man say to another: "They sky is the limit." He meant that a man could make anything of himself that he wanted, at least on earth.

Well, they sky is no longer the limit! There's almost no limit to what you can aspire to do, either on earth or in space.

Col. Buzz Aldrin, veteran astronaut, who was a member on Scout Troop 12 in New Jersey, has urged young people to obtain a well-rounded background in many fields of knowledge, to select one field and strive to achieve excellence in it. "Set your goals high and settle for nothing less than accomplishment," Aldrin said.

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: February 25, 2010

This week we started working on the requirements for our Art belt loop. We talked about the common materials used to create a visual art composition and then discussed the elements of design. We discussed lines, shapes, patterns, textures, space, balance, and perspective; and drew examples of each. The boys did a wonderful job. Next, each scout had to create a stamp, cd cover or book cover using at least three of the elements they had learned.

Next week we will complete the Art belt loop by discussing the color wheel. If your scout was not able to attend this weeks den meeting and would still like to earn the Art belt loop, please let me know and I can get you a copy of the worksheet we used to discuss the elements of design.

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: February 18, 2010

This week the scouts worked on Achievement 3 b and c. The scouts were given a health habits chart to track their health habits for two weeks. Parents, please sign off on Achievement 3a when your scout has completed his chart.

After working on our achievement requirements, the scouts played human foosball. I must say I felt pretty old when several of the scouts commented that they didn't know what foosball was. Hopefully, they enjoyed the game anyway.

Pack Meeting: February 11, 2010

Wow, what a great Birthday party we had for the BSA. I was so happy the everyone came to celebrate with us. I first have to apologize that I don't have any photos to post. I came prepared with my camera, but was so busy, I forgot to take it out. So if anyone has pictures that they would like to share, please email them to me at michellebird17@hotmail.com. Thanks.

We started off our party with a wonderfully done rendition of "Happy Birthday." Afterward, we dug into a typical birthday party dinner of pizza, fruit, veggies and chips. Topped off with birthday cupcakes, each with their own candle.

After our dinner, we handed out awards to the boys. A special congratulations to Garrison Hauet for receiving his Bear badge and his upcoming advancement into the Webelos. That is a great accomplishment. Next, the Wolf pack (Jake Kemp, Tyrell Gwilliam, Adam Hildt, Shayne Zullo, Jaxon Wilde and Luke Morris), received their Communicating belt loops.

After all this, there was still more. We played a few party games including "Pin the Badge on the Scout" and "Balloon Stomp". I had such a great time and I hope everyone else did too.

Thank you to everyone who helped set up and clean up. A big thanks to Lori Pond, Emily Giles and Julie Janes for putting candles on all our cupcakes. And of course Thanks to all the parents and boys for coming and supporting the scouts.

Friday, February 5, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: February 4, 2010

This week the scouts continued to work on their Communicating belt loop by making a poster of something that interests them and explaining it to the den. The boys did a great job. They love to draw and always have a story to tell. Needless to say, the Communicating belt loop was easy to achieve.

After working on our belt loop, we played a quick game of cotton ball blow out. It takes a lot of hot air.

Thanks for all your hard work boys. Remember, next week will be our Pack Meeting, the Blue and Gold Banquet. See you there.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Calendar of Events: February 2010

February 2010 Theme: Happy Birthday, BSA

It's time to celebrate with a big birthday bash: the Boy Scouts of America is 100 years old this year.

The story: In 1909, a Chicago publisher, William D. Boyce (brought the Boy Scouts to America), lost his way in a dense London fog. A young scout came to his aid, guiding him through the fog. William D. Boyce tried to give him a tip, but the scout explained that he could not take a tip for doing a Good Turn. William D. Boyce was inspired by the actions of the scout and met with Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts.

It began with a scout helping another person find his way. It began with a few men of intelligence and a love of the outdoors and youth. They had an idea, determination, and enthusiasm. They used all of those things to turn their idea into the reality we call the Boy Scouts of America.

Friday, January 29, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: January 28, 2010

This week we worked with the boys on the flag ceremony. The boys did a great job. We still need some practice, but they are doing great.

We also worked on another requirement for our communicating belt loop, writing a letter; and made invitations for February's pack meeting, the Blue and Gold Banquet. Just another reminder, pack meeting is on Thursday, February the 11th at 6:30 p.m. We will be having dinner, so please let me know by Tuesday, February 9th, how many people from your family will be coming. We are celebrating the 100th Birthday of the scouting program, please be sure to come and celebrate with us.

Sunday, January 24, 2010

Wolf Den Meeting: January 21, 2010

This week we worked on Achievement 8a and 8b. We learned about the food pyramid and named foods from each of the food groups. We also planned the meals the scouts and their families should have for one day. At each meal, the scouts should have foods from at least three food groups.

Parents, please help your scouts finish up Achievement 8 by working on c,d,and e requirements at home.

Pack Meeting: January 14, 2010

This month at pack meeting we had two scouts get some very important badges. Luke Morris received his Bobcat badge as well as a music belt loop. Jake Kemp received his Wolf badge as well. Congratulations to both Luke and Jake. Earning their rank badges is such an accomplishment.

After the badge ceremony, we played a few games of slammers and creepers, and cotton ball blow out.

Just an important reminder, next month's Pack Meeting is the Blue and Gold banquet. This is a special event, but has a very special milestone attached to it this year as well, since Scouting is celebrating it's 100th anniversary. Please put, Thursday, February, 11, on your calendars and be sure to attend.

Thanks.

Wolf Den Meeting: January 7, 2010

This week we worked on one of the requirements for the communicating belt loop. After our opening ceremonies, we chased the boys into the kitchen where we decorated some fabulous cupcakes that Cynthia (the other Den Leader) had made for us. The boys did a wonderful job. I'm sure you could imagine what they looked like.

After our cupcakes were completed we went back to our scouting room and each boy got to tell a story, true or made up, of their choosing. This was the requirement for our communications belt loop. As usual, there was no lack of enthusiasum to tell a story.

After our cupcakes and story telling, we went into the gym to burn off some sugar with a game of SPUD.

Thanks everyone for coming and participating.

So Sorry It's Been So Long

What a way to start the new year. I just wanted to apologize that I've been slacking in keeping up the Cub Scout blog for the last several weeks. Thanks for your understanding. I'll try and do better in the future.
